Did you send us a Postcard for the Future ?

Over the summer and autumn of 2011 we ran a public consultation campaign at all the shows and events we attended, inviting people to fill in one of our Postcards for the Future, telling us how they would like the South Downs to be in 20 years time. Thank you very much if you were one of those people. The information we gathered from this exercise was fascinating to read and gave us a really good insight into what you value about the South Downs and the future direction you would like it to…See More

Autumn Marathon complete!

The nine Autumn Workshops were completed at the final Rowlands Castle event on 7th Nov. Attached here you can read the report on the last three workshops and on the Forum site you can also watch the video of the final event. With over 36 hours of consultation, at least 40 round tables and reams of flipchart paper, this was a marathon exercise but very well worth the effort. Out of 444 “attendances” quite a number of dedicated individuals came to two or even all three of each series.Looking…See More

I’m really excited to see that over 500 of you are now using the online Forum, and that 133 people came to the first round of Autumn workshops.  Thank you all!  There is a tangible buzz about the Management Plan now,  and its been hugely helpful to us in the office to get some very solid feedback on the proposals on the National Parks’ special qualities – no less than 255 responses, many of them quite detailed.  Analysing all this stuff will be a huge job, but it is very motivating to have such…See More

BOOK NOW! – More chances to tell us what you want for YOUR National Park

Last Friday we posted up the draft Special Qualities of the South Downs National Park and asked what you thought about them. I’m really chuffed that over 170 people have already responded. This really matters because these Special Qualities will be the foundation for everything we do. They’re also very personal of course. In my case, it’s being with my family on top of Harting Down on Saturday afternoon – a warm wind blowing, the Isle of Wight shimmering in the milky early autumn light, and the…See More

Petworth votes no to chocolate box

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 21:33 3 Comments

Hi. The first community workshop in Petworth on Friday managed to keep fifty people away from the pub and the TV for four hours. Not much sign of support for the chocolate box view of a National park here – the emphasis was firmly on needing vibrant and thriving communities, social housing and jobs for young people – alongside the restoration of nature. No sign of backwards looking on Thursday either, when the Sussex Wildlife Trust holds its 50th Anniversary conference “The Nature of Change”…

To change or not to change?

We have over 350 of you using this Forum now – and lively debates running on public transport, the rural economy, Parish Plans and so forth. As from now anyone can sign up, and it is linked it much more clearly to our main SDNPA website.

An underlying topic on the Forum has been change. How much is acceptable? How should we respond to or manage it? Is everything in the garden rosy, or do the chocolate box images of the South Downs disguise disturbing underlying trends towards a…

Eight Days On

Posted on July 27, 2011 at 14:00 0 Comments

Eight days on from the Stanmer event and we already have over 120 people signed up online! This is a good start, but I would like to see many more joining as we get into the nitty-gritty of developing a Management Plan for the National Park. We need your views on the things which should go on the plan, and lots more debate about the tough issues like housing, access, and the rural economy. You’ll be hearing a great deal more about this as the SDNPA will be running a series of workshops…
