New 'Discovery' Bus Ticket Launches in the South Downs this Weekend

Now you can be free to discover everything the region has to offer by bus

This weekend the South Downs National Park Authority is launching a campaign to promote a new bus ticket called ‘Discovery’. The ticket offers unlimited one-day travel across the South Downs and the surrounding South of England area allowing users to travel across multiple bus operators with one ticket. Plus, until 31st August, the ticket is available for just £12.50 for a family of five offering a bargain day out for families during the summer holidays.

To promote the ticket to the public, on Saturday 5th July branded Discovery ice cream carts will be situated at key locations across the South Downs, offering free exclusive ‘Cream Tea’ flavoured ice creams ((strawberries, clotted cream and poppy seeds) to anyone who travels by bus. Ice cream sellers will also be informing the public about the ticket, handing out information and driving people to our new website The Discovery carts will be available at the following locations:

  • 10am-1pm: Queen Elizabeth Country Park and Lewes Castle
  • 2pm-5pm: Arundel Castle and Seven Sisters Sheep Centre

The new Discovery ticket is valid on the services of all the main bus operators in West Sussex, East Sussex, Surrey, Brighton & Hove and East Hampshire. The new ticket replaces the previous Explorer ticket. The existing Explorer Ticket will continue to be available only within East Sussex for local travel within the county boundaries, on certain operators’ services.

The new Discovery ticket is an excellent way to explore the South Downs National Park.  A new network of additional Sunday and Public Holiday services now make the attractions and beautiful countryside of the National Park even more accessible by bus.

You can buy your ticket from the driver of any participating service and there are no time restrictions - so buy your ticket as early as you like for a full day of discovery and exploring!

To make it even more attractive for families to discover the South Downs National Park without a car, various visitor attractions are promoting 2-for-1entry offers. To find out more and for suggestions on great days out by bus itineraries, visit .

Rather alarmingly, this offer is only till 31st August.  What happens after that?

At the end of August, the bus operators will review how the ticket is going and make a decision on whether it is viable to continue to offer such a good value fare or if it needs to revert to the normal price of £16 - which for a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 children) would still represent good value (normal adult tickets £8.50, child tickets £7).

Good value?  £7 for a child is theft, and twice the previous price
