Quick scan on Google Street View ....
Houghton Bridge is developing as a Honey Pot along the South Downs Way bringing much needed Trade and Employment to the area .... biggest blight are the Park Homes along the river bank .... rapid growing Poplars would do much to screen them.
Village Design Statement would help Planners and Developers alike to establish some coherence to the area.
Notice a good example of "behind the hedge" footpath and bridleway along the B2139 for SAFE RIDING ... !
There are far too many private commercial signs along all our roads. Some of them advertise things that are several miles distant. Should there not be tighter regulation on this?
Have a feeling that Planning Regulations since the 1946 Act do cover this sort of thing .... it is down to Enforcement Officers to take action ....
There is a facility to add appropriate "Visitor Attractions", marked in brown, to existing highway signs .....
Amberley Chalk Pit Museum seems to have missed out on that one.
I don't think the Enforcement Officers can be very active.
That part of the river bank is in Houghton Parish and they asked for it to be removed. The restaurant owner has now placed the sign on the roof of the kitchen, closer to the road (bridge) which still looks dreadful. It now falls within the Parish of Amberley, I believe.
Somebody from SDNPA HQ should be coming on this one to sort it out !
Along with the adjoining parish of east Chiltington, we are now carrying out a survey of road signs and grass verges. Around here most of the roads are single carriageway. Lots of hroseriders, walkers and cyclists. The wide grass verges are now only cut to one metre width so mostly overgrowm with brambles, ragwort, thistles etc. No room to pass so roads becoming dangerous due to cost-cutting neglect.
Many road signs are repetitive and unnecessary.
When our surveys are completed we shall taske the matter up with the relevant authority. Suggest other parishes do likewise
Google Street View Smart Camera Technology is coming on apace .....
Mark 4 is High Definition .... enough to identify vegetation, fly tipping, road maintenance problems, planning transgressions, blocked footpaths and ditches.
Equipment light enough to be carried on a car roof .... or even an adapted tricycle for monitoring off-road tracks.
Quicker, safer and more consistent than guys with clipboards.
Google Earth Surveys seem to be at increasingly close intervals .... presumably carried out by licensed Agencies.
Results of incidental value to a wide range of people .... including horse riders, wildlife enthusiasts, archaeologists and academics.
Associated Historical Air Photos go back to WW2 and Aerofilm days ... no doubt linked in to OS mapping and IACS Stewardship Scheme.
Folks on the ground able to examine "hot spots" in more detail .....
Road signs are breeding like mad ... one simple T junction near here has 23 sets of Traffic lights .... plus all the other bits and pieces !
Needs someone in high places to do a bit of co-ordination :)
